“GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS” 

READ IN THE BIBLE (Romans 1:16)

You probably have heard the expression, “I have good news and bad news.  Which do you want to hear first?”  The Gospel message in the Bible is, “Good News” because it is, “The power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth”.  (Romans 1:16).  This is certainly good news.  Although the word “Gospel” means “good news” (God’s good news), it also contains bad news.  You must know about the bad news before you will have a desire to hear and believe the good news.  THE BAD NEWS IS FOR GOOD PEOPLE and THE GOOD NEWS IS FOR BAD PEOPLE.  Do you consider yourself a “good person” or a “bad person”?  Most people would probably describe themselves as a good person.  I used to think I was a good person.  After all, I reasoned, I am better than most people.  I don’t do the things they do or say the things they say.  I believed that God would measure my so called good deeds and they would outweigh my bad deeds.  Surely God will take me to heaven when my time comes to go.  Thank God He showed me from the Bible that my reasoning was foolish and dangerous.  It says in, (2 Corinthians 10:12) “They measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise”.  I was not being wise when comparing myself with other people.  The important question is, “What does God say in His Word about our so called “goodness”?  Lets consider first of all;

THE BAD NEWS FOR GOOD PEOPLE

It says in, (Psalms 14:1-3) “THERE IS NONE THAT DOETH GOOD”.   “The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.  They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy:  THERE IS NONE THAT DOETH GOOD, NO NOT ONE”.  Notice God’s perception , He looked down from heaven.  Next, notice God’s declaration,  He said, “there is none that doeth good”.   How different is God’s description of mankind verses man’s description of himself.  In, (Romans 3:9-12) it says, “Jews and Gentiles ... All are under sin”.  “There is none righteous, no not”.  “They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable: THERE IS NONE THAT DOETH GOOD, NO NOT ONE”.  It says in, (Romans 3:23) ‘All have sinned and come short of the glory of God”.  For any who think they are moral and upright and living so called righteous lives, God says in His Word, (Isaiah 64:6) “We are all as an unclean thing, and ALL our righteousnesses are as filthy rags”.  You can see from God’s Word in these scriptures and others- the truth is, there are NO good people in the sight of a holy God.  (Romans 8:8) “They that are in the flesh cannot please God”.  You cannot merit God’s salvation for anything you are, or work for God’s salvation by anything you do.  People think they must do something in order to receive God’s salvation.  They often think they must make an improvement in themselves or promise to do better, to lead a new life, etc.  There are many who believe if they give up this or that and join a church and observe certain religious duties that they will gain favor with God.  Many are depending on baptism as a child or as an adult for their  assurance of salvation.  Contrary to the teaching of many churches in Christendom there is no saving merit in baptism,  A study of the Bible, the Word of God, will reveal that baptism is for believers only, for those who are already saved.  Notice what God’s Word says about working for your salvation.  (Titus 3:5) “NOT BY WORKS of righteousness which we have done”.  (Ephesians 2:8,9) “For by grace (God’s free unmerited favor) are ye saved by faith; and that NOT OF YOURSELVES: it is the gift of God”.  “Not by works, lest any man boast”.  

Christ warns those who think they are good.  (Mark 2:17) “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance”.  (Matthew 18:3) “Except ye be converted, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven”.  (Luke 13:3) “Except ye repent, ye shall also likewise perish”.  (John 3:3) Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”.  (John 3:7) “YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN”.  (John 3:18) “ He that believeth not (on Christ as Savior) is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God”.  (John 3:36) “He that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him”.  

The only people who are good in God’s sight are those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.  The Lord Jesus responded to a question that was asked of him.  The question was, (John 6:28, 29) “What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?‘ Christ replied, “This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom He (God) hath  sent”.  You may be moral, religious, kind, generous, a church-goer, a Bible reader, and a host of other things that people count as good; but in the end, it is only God’s opinion that matters.  The only person God counts as good is the man or woman who is “Born Again”, who has accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  But, that not the end of the story:

THERE IS GOOD NEWS FOR BAD PEOPLE

 Let’s notice some scriptures in God’s Word that explain this amazing truth.  Remember, we noticed above, we are all bad, we are all sinners by nature and by practice before a Holy God. “THERE IS NONE THAT DOETH GOOD, NO NOT ONE”.  Because of this God says in, (Isaiah 1:18) “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white  as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool”.  God is saying in this verse, “Let us put the matter right, or settle the matter.  It means “put an end to all reasoning”.  Two words are used to describe your sins.  “scarlet”,  reflects the deeply dyed and permanent nature of your sin which only God’s grace and power can make as white as snow.  When David confessed his sin in (Psalm 51:7) he prayed, “Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow”. The second word is “crimson” (a deep red).  It is the Hebrew word, “Tola” which is used of a worm or grub which when crushed it produced a crimson color used to dye cloths. 

God also says in His Word, (1 Timothy 1:15) “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”.  If you agree with God that you are a sinner then Christ Jesus came into the world to save YOU.  He came to save”bad” people people not “good” people.  (Romans 5:6) “Christ died for the ungodly” (not the so-called godly, for there are none.).  In says in, (Luke 19:10) “For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which is lost”. (i.e., all humanity.  Every person born into this world are born with Adam’s fallen, sinful nature.  THE GOOD NEWS FOR BAD PEOPLE is that you can have your sins forgiven by God.  (Luke 15:22) “This Man (Jesus) receiveth sinners and eateth with them.  (Mark 2:10) “The Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins”. (Men and women’s greatest need is to have their sin’s forgiven.).   It says in, (1 John 1:7) “The blood of Jesus Christ ... cleanseth us (who trust Him as Savior) from all sin”.  It says in, (Acts 10:43) “WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM (Jesus) shall receive remission (forgiveness) of sins”.  (Acts 16:31) “BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”.  In (John 3:16) we have a most wonderful revelation from God.  It says, “For God so loved the world the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM should not perish, but have everlasting life”.  (Romans 5:1) “Therefore BEING JUSTIFIED BY FAITH, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. To be justified by God is to be declared righteous by God.  The only righteousness that will get you to heaven is a “God imputed righteousness” given to those who receive Christ as their Savior.  Notice how a person is justified before a Holy God.  It is not by works.  A person can only be justified before God by faith.  It says in, (John 3:17, 18,36) “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved”.  “HE THAT BELIEVETH ON HIM (Jesus) is not condemned”.  “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life”.  

What should YOU do regarding these Biblical truths?  You need to believe God and simply take the sinners place of a lost, helpless, hopeless sinner before a Holy God.  You need to repent of your sins because the Lord Jesus Christ said in, (Luke 13:3, 5) “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish”.  Further more He said in, (Acts 17:30) “God ... Now commandeth ALL MEN EVERYWHERE to repent”.  “Repentance” means to change your mind about your sinful deeds and life.  In true repentance, there is an element of remorse for sins that leads to a definite change of attitude and action.  For all who repent of their sins and acknowledge they are a lost sinner before a Holy God, the GOOD NEWS is that Jesus Christ, by His sacrificial death on the cross, has provided salvation for you.  THERE IS GOOD NEWS FOR BAD PEOPLE.  God offers salvation to you as a free gift.  Will you, in simple faith, reach out and take God’s wonderful gift?  (Romans 6:23) “The wages of sin is death; but THE GIFT OF GOD IS ETERNAL LIFE through Jesus Christ our Lord”.

In closing, I urge YOU to take advantage of this present time while you can and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as YOUR own personal Savior.  YOU are traveling the “highway of life”, passing through time on the way to eternity.  There are only two destinations before you.  It will either be eternal joy in heaven or eternal sorrow in hell.  Now that you have read this message you have come to a “crossroads” on your life’s journey.  Which way will you go?  The Gospel (God’s good news) is not a message about something you are required to do.  It is a message revealing that Jesus Christ has already done all that is necessary for your salvation.  It was all done on the cross when He bore your sins in His own body on the tree.  Your responsibility is believe it and receive it.  If you reject God’s Son and the free gift of salvation He has made available you will remain on the “Broadway” to eternal destruction, trading a few short years of pleasure, popularity, and power for eternal torment in the “Lake of Fire”.  If you receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior heaven will be your eternal home.  The “Father’s House” will be your eternal dwelling place.  (Acts 16:31) “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved”.  Will YOU believe in Him and by a definite act of faith, receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your own personal Savior.  Please give this matter your most serious attention.  Your eternal destiny depends on your decision.
